Founded in 1908, the town’s history dates back to when British colonial governor Alexander Spotswood first arrived in the Shenandoah Valley. After George Conrad built a general store in 1785, the area was then referred to as “Conrad’s Store.” Following the war and its development as an industrial town, the town’s name was changed to “Elk Run”, after the elk found in the nearby stream. “Elkton” became the town’s official name in 1881.
