A Brief History

Tobias Randolph McGahey, a surveyor, arrived in this lush area of rolling hills that was previously discovered by British colonial governor Alexander Spotswood. When he established a post office here in 1802, he used the name, “McGaheysville”. The name hasn’t changed up to the present.

Cave Hill Farm Brewery, one of the top breweries in the area, sits on 6th generation farmland that has been with the Hopkins family since 1759. The brewery has a wide selection of beers that includes India Pale Ales, blond ales, and wheat beer. Meanwhile, the Thunderbird Café is one of the community’s most popular dining spots. The café’s menu is deeply inspired by Southern cuisine and features specialty burritos, delightfully greasy burgers, and delicious sandwiches.

    McGaheysville offers plenty of opportunities for indoor and outdoor recreation. Known for being one of the best indoor waterparks in America, the Massanutten Indoor Waterpark has body slides, lazy river floats, water fortresses, and inflatable adventures for everyone to enjoy. 

    The Shenandoah National Park, which is less than 20 minutes away from McGaheysville, is a haven for nature lovers. The park boasts 200,000 acres of protected land filled with cascading waterfalls, rocky peaks, and amazing views.

    McGaheysville’s location near the Shenandoah River and the Blue Ridge Parkway also provides residents with plenty of fishing and hiking opportunities.

    Located at the foot of the Massanutten Mountain, the McGaheysville Elementary School offers top-notch education for preschoolers all the way to the fifth grade. The elementary school aims to create life-long learners by fostering cooperation among its stakeholders: the school, the community, and the students’ respective families. Nearby schools include Cub Run Elementary School, Montevideo Middle School, East Rockingham High School, and Spotswood High School.
