New Market

New Market is a quaint countryside community that offers a distinct old-world charm while also granting easy access to modern conveniences and the wonders of nature.

First founded as a small crossroads trading town in the 1700s, New Market is now a thriving community that’s home to some 2,000 residents.

The town lies at the foot of the Massanutten Mountain and is home to several historic structures and museums dedicated to the Civil War. Its defining feature is its heritage buildings that exemplify the simplicity and craftsmanship of its early German settlers.

A brief history

The town’s iconic architecture is the handiwork of Mennonite and Lutheran German immigrants who first settled on the land after discovering the richness of the soil and the abundance of wild game. They were soon followed by Irish and Scottish settlers.

New Market was founded by General John Sevier, but it was first recognized as a town in 1796 after it was established by a charter of the Virginia General Assembly.

Owing to New Market’s strategic location at the center of the Shenandoah Valley, it played an active role during the Civil War.  Stonewall Jackson’s troops marched through this town on four different occasions. It was also the site of the Battle of New Market, one of the Confederate Army’s last victories.

In 1972, New Market was designated as a historic district by the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission. Shortly thereafter, it was also registered with the National Register of Historic Places.
